Right on the Keizersgracht, Canal House looks out across the water, in one of central Amsterdam’s prettiest locations. Easily found, this beautiful boutique hotel in the intimate Jordaan district occupies 17th-century merchant’s houses just 15 minutes’ walk from Centraal Station – meaning plenty of the city’s attractions are within easy reach too.
With multiple levels of luxury on offer, Canal House is the place to be for a decadent city break. Its 23 bedrooms are ranked from ‘Good’ to ‘Outstanding’, not forgetting the one-of-a-kind ‘Best Room’ right at the top, enjoying the finest views over the canal.
Even at the lower end of the scale, guests enjoy views over the garden, an LCD TV with Blu-ray, Bose iPod dock and a mini-bar. A king-size bed, walk-in shower or bathtub and artful design can also be expected. Larger, with an extra touch of privacy, ‘Better’ Rooms overlook an internal lightwell, while the walls of the unique ‘Great’ Rooms are lined with eye-catching artworks. Bathrooms have bathtubs and double sinks, while the mini-bar offers extra, locally sourced treats.
The generously proportioned ‘Exceptional’ Rooms up the glamour quotient yet more – plush sofas, velvet curtains, bespoke furnishings and many period features make them truly special. You are guaranteed a canal view in either of the two ‘Outstanding’ Rooms, along with an in-room bath and oodles of space, while the ‘Best Room’ delivers on its promise with a lounge, glass shower and bath for two.
Every room at Canal House has tea and coffee, Green & Spring bath products and free Wi-Fi, plus, when morning comes, there’s a complimentary buffet breakfast for all. The cool bar at the front of the hotel makes an enticing spot to enjoy a cocktail or Dutch beer late into the evening.
Canal House is a short stroll from the Anne Frank House and the ‘Negen Straatjes’ – the 9 little streets which connect the canals, lined with one-off shops and lunch spots. The hotel has plenty of recommendations for the best eateries and coffee shops around and about Jordaan, as well as the most intriguing fashion and design stores. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and glorious Vondelpark are a little further out, but grab a tram and you’ll be there soon enough.
If you fancy a change of pace, it’s only 15 minutes to the pretty city of Haarlem, with the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and the beaches of Bloemendaal just beyond. This part of The Netherlands has it all, and Canal House will give your stay an extra touch of class.
