Once a newspaper headquarters and now home to 201 impressive rooms, Volkshotel is a little slice of the future and prides itself on being the kind of hotel where anyone can stay including single mums, romantic couples, hip young artists, those who party all night and those who like to snuggle up with a movie. Everyone is welcome.
Their standard rooms are presented to a very high standard. Think IKEA at the top of its game. Every room is different but all have big comfy beds, showers, safes and WiFi. They range from tiny budget rooms that still manage to have a whiff of real class and huge studios where a family could happily reside with funky kitchen and living areas. In addition to this they have eight special rooms, each one designed by a different person and focusing on a theme. Some favourites here include the cinema room which is perfect for the person who enjoys making the most of the inside of the hotel. It has a huge cosy bed, dark red walls echoing the old fashioned cinema décor and, yes, a cinema screen just for you. There's also a slightly saucy room called Soixante-Neuf that is dark and erotic with a bed suspended from the ceiling and some curious kabuki masks hanging on the wall. There's also a cycle room which comes with two bikes for making your way around Amsterdam, a Japanese themed space with a big square tub in the centre of the room, a cabin in the woods themed room and a Jukebox room where everything slopes! Something for everyone, as promised.
Volkhotel has a fabulous restaurant and cocktail bar called Canvas where you can enjoy a sumptuous meal and a cheeky drink or just rock up for a cup of tea. They also have something called 'Doka' which is in the basement and is basically a very cool club for dancing and meeting people at the weekend. They have a constant changing timetable of DJ's and performances.
The hotel prides itself on a lively scene at the weekends including live music and cultural events and something they refer to as a soundscape experience. All very intriguing and quite exciting.
In addition to all this they also offer yoga classes, massages for the hard working or heart broken, Baadplats which is a mini spa on the roof with hot tubs and saunas, a creative work space where people can knuckle down in the company of strangers and order a burger or a coffee. On Fridays you can even get a haircut here to make you feel fresh and smart for the weekend!
This really is a one of kind hotel and provides enough entertainment, treats and comfort to make you not want to leave for your entire stay. But if you do decide to explore the glorious city of Amsterdam, Volkshotel have bikes you can rent to do so. Go see some tulips, sample some of the local delicacies and marvel at how thoroughly lovely the Netherlands are.
