This charming, self-catering lodge offers groups of up to four guests a unique and cosy place to stay in the Irish countryside. Tucked away in the heart of Waterford, Damson Gate Lodge is located on the amazing grounds of the historic 18th-century Mount Congreve estate. The lodge was originally built in 1775, and has been lovingly renovated to create a dog-friendly stay that’s ideal for couples looking for a romantic break as well as small groups of friends and small families.

As you enter, you’ll love the classic charm on offer, thanks to the deep bold colour schemes, the exposed stonework in the lounge and the fabulously chosen furnishings throughout. Get comfy in the living room, with its 18th-century French day-bed accompanied by classic wing-back velvet armchairs. This is the perfect place to settle in with a drink in hand with your nearest and dearest for company, or while away an evening watching your favourite film on the Smart TV. There’s also an antique bio-ethanol stove to ensure you stay toasty and warm whatever the weather outside.

The lodge also has a superb galley kitchen that makes meal prep a joy. There are lovely marble countertops here and all the modern appliances (including a superb Smeg oven and hob) you’ll need to prepare hearty breakfasts, tasty lunches and grand dinners. Then, when food’s served, sit at the round dining table, just off the kitchen, that sets the scene for romantic dinners that stretch into the night.

If you don’t fancy cooking, you can always head to The Stables Cafe which sits in the estate’s grounds. Breakfast is served here every day, and there’s also a takeaway supper menu, should you wish to order some food to eat back at your lodge.

When night falls, head to bed in one of the two fabulous bedrooms, both of which offer antique double beds for a bit of classic style. The bedrooms have been lovingly designed, featuring soothing colour schemes and beautiful furnishings ensuring you and your loved ones enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.

If you fancy venturing out to explore the estate, be sure to visit the impeccable gardens. The Gardens span approximately 70 acres of lush, densely planted woodland, along with a four-acre walled garden and 16 kilometers of scenic walkways. Nestled on a gentle slope overlooking the River Suir, Mount Congreve boasts a vast collection of thousands of diverse trees, plants and shrubs.

If you want to head further afield, be sure to explore the award-winning Waterford Greenway. This stunning 46km off-road cycling and walking trail follows a former railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan, offering a breathtaking journey from river to sea. Whether you begin in Waterford City or Dungarvan, Mount Congreve Gardens makes for the perfect stop along the way.
